Yttrium Applications

Yttrium has been studied for possible use as a nodulizer in the making of nodular cast iron which has increased ductility (the graphite forms compact nodules instead of flakes) to form nodular cast iron in manufacture of stainless and heat-resistant steels. Yttrium is often used as an additive in nickel, cobalt, chromium and niobium-based alloys, increased the ductility and strengthen Tungsten, Hafnium, Zirconium, Molybdenum and Tantalum - based hard-melting alloys, strengthen of Aluminium and Magnesium alloys used in aviation. In electronics Yttrium - Lanthanum, Aluminium alloys are used as getters. Hard-melting and fireproof Yttrium borides, sulphides and oxides-based materials are used in powerful generators cathodes. Yttrium orthovanadate and oxysulphides with activated Eu is used in colour TV glass coating, Yttrium oxysulphides with activated Terbium - in medical diagnostics. Yttrium is a laser material.
